Juno and Boyle are living in Dublin's tenements during the Irish Civil War. Her son Johnny, who lost his arm during the Easter Rising and spends his days at home in dread; and her daughter Mary, a young and rather vain idealist who is now striking. Mary's fiancé Charlie Bentham tells the family they may get money from Boyle's dead uncle. Following the news, Boyle borrows money and buys furnishings, a suit, and a phonograph on credit. Despite the funeral procession of Mrs. Tancred's slain son, the family and their neighbor, Mrs. Madigan, enjoy a singing evening.
Tragically, Boyle learns that Bentham, who wrote the will, set it up such that all of Boyle's first and second cousins were entitled to a share of the estate. Bentham flees to England. Because of her pregnancy, Mary is ostracised by male relatives and ex-boyfriends. As the furniture workers depart, two Republican troops arrest Johnny; he is subsequently killed for providing information about Mrs. Tancred's son's murder.
Juno chooses to live with her sister and raise her child with her, leaving Boyle alone. Towards the conclusion of the game, Boyle and Joxer return to the scene, with Boyle withdrawing into a realm of alcohol-induced delusion.
